Game engines tend to imposes the splash-screen logomark/titlecard thing as a means of brand-awareness and free advertising, but often it has lead to general consumers, with no interest in the game-dev process itself, forming opinions about the engine based on their experience with lower-quality products. They aren't super invested, they're using the free-version, and their game looks like crap or an asset-flip or both - and meanwhile, the engine's logo is the first thing anyone sees before the dumpster fire begins. You have a ton of new, wannabe game-devs who are showing off the first game they've ever made. Those engine-advertising splash-screens have been a double-edged sword for every engine that imposes it on free users. It's actually an ideal time to be a content creator for Godot on Youtube, so I'm quite certain you'll see more of these sort of channels by 2021. So even if there aren't a lot of popular channels talking about Godot still, there are definitely more channels popping up that will. HeartBeast used to make a large percent of the best GameMakerStudio tutorials on Youtube before switching to Godot (and still does, actually, as they go back-and-forth between the two engines, if you look through their videos) - so that might've contributed to Godot's relatively recent spike in users too.
Some haven't switched to Godot because they simply are too-comfortable with their current engine to make a focal switch yet.
Polish and ingenuity does take a lot of time, money and effort after all.Īside from the manual, there are several youtube channels producing good tutorial content for Godot.Īnd there are probably some others that are just lesser-known still.Ī lot of the game-dev youtube channels that were either Game Maker or Unity focused gave positive recommendations for Godot during 2019.
Give it a few more years and I'm sure you'll see more polished titles that carry the Godot banner in time. To continue that analogy, however, there are chefs in the kitchen cooking with Godot right now.
Godot is just an engine in the toolbox - if we were to blame it for the quality of products produced that would be similar to blaming a lesser known brand of kitchen knives for not being used at any 5-star restaurants. In fact, being an open-sourced clone of Unity is probably the biggest reason anyone gravitates to Godot already - which means it's kind of a slim and niche audience that has to carry the engine into the spotlight anyways. Godot just has an uphill battle with competing in the market when other game engines are so popular already and offer conveniences that aren't available to an open-sourced engine like this. There are some limitations to the engine, as the case with any other, but I don't think they are what impedes the creativity and polish you're looking for - if that's what you are implying. Because not a lot of developers use Godot yet, compared to Unity or Unreal or GameMaker, and so the threshold of opportunity to create something of superb quality is a lot lower.
